Skills and Employability

Skills and Employability

As a dynamic and constantly developing practice we are always keen to hear from individuals interested in pursuing a career in accounting. We believe that our employees are our greatest asset and we have designed training programmes to ensure that trainees are given every opportunity to realise their full potential.

We recruit 10-12 trainees across the firm each year, to study a range of accounting, tax, corporate finance and audit qualifications.

As well as in-house training opportunities we are keen to promote accounting as a career to school, college and university students. We attend careers fairs annually across the North West to provide employability and career advice to students considering a career in the accounting industry.

We also provide mentors to take part in the ICAEW Base competition which is a National Business and Accounting competition for students aged 16-19. It is a unique and exciting experience where students are able to engage in a business challenge that enables them to develop key employability skills and understand what it’s like to be a Chartered Accountant.

Our award winning training partners work closely with the Employer Skills Group organised by the Greater Manchester Centre for Voluntary Organisation with support from GM Futures, a partnership with Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce. Our contributions ensure that voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations across Greater Manchester have better access to skills and training opportunities that are relevant to their employees.

Our partnership with the University Centre at Blackburn College has allowed us to highlight training and job opportunities to students before they finish their degree.

Students from the University Centre at Blackburn College have taken part in guided tours, workshops and discussions at our Blackburn office, resulting in Jodie Dunne being offered a work placement programme.

We recently formed a partnership with Blackburn Central High School (BCHS) where we meet with students selected for mentoring to raise their aspirations, confidence, self-esteem and achievements.  Also a lunch and learn event including a tour of Manchester United Football Club.  The students are presented with information on who we are, what we do and career options which the firm can offer.  We also stage mock interviews and CV reviews, so pupils are aware of what will be expected for higher education or upon entry to the work environment.  From the start of the 2019/20 academic year, we have become the schools formal Enterprise Adviser.  The role of the Enterprise Adviser is pivotal as it provides the school with a formal relationship and partnership, with the aim to further develop and drive forward the school's careers strategy.  BCHS has already made significant progress towards full achievement of the GATSBY benchmarks and with our appointment as Enterprise Adviser, we are both striving for full achievement by the end of this academic year. 10 recycled laptops were gifted to the school to enable to mentoring programme to continue during the COVID-19 pandemic and period of national lockdown.

We donated 6 recycled laptops to Manchester Communication Academy for use by either pupils or for community use.

We also attended a Careers Carousel event at St Wilfrid's C of E Academy in Blackburn recently.  Students met with a range of employers who cover a broad range of industries, to develop their understanding of the wide range of roles that exist in the local area.  The students were given a short window (approximately 5 minutes) to find out about the company, different job roles on offer and what they shoudl be doing in order to prepare themselves for the working world.

Our offer to improve skills, employability and entrepreneurship

We provide careers and employability support to 20 people each year by undertaking CV or application form reviews and mock interviews.

  • We attend school and college career fairs throughout the year to promote employability and provide careers advice.
  • We provide work experience placements of between 1 to 6 weeks for school, college and university students.  We welcome repeat placements if students want to return and we are proud that some of our placement students are now part of the team studying for a formal accountancy qualification.
  • We offer a free consultation to any start-up business.
  • We review and prepare business plans, advise on finance for start-ups and provide advice on investment and other funding options.
  • We attend and present at employability events to promote careers and training opportunities available in the accountancy sector and the training opportunities we can provide.

We offer placements to children over the summer months as part of their school requirement to spend one week in work experience. We also offer year 3 University students 12 month placements prior to completing their final year at University.  These are paid placements and several places are usually offered per year in London and Manchester.  We also take on a couple of undergraduate students to gain work experience for a few weeks during the summer.

  • As Curricula & Co  partners we provide a bespoke package of accountancy and business support services to members of their entrepreneur academy to help them develop their ideas into profitable businesses. They recently partnered with the Young Enterprise scheme to empower young people and encourage them into long-term careers. As part of our partnership with Curricula we also provide work experience to students wanting to become accountants.  These week long placements help them learn new skills and key employability traits for the future.
  • We are an accredited member of ICAEW Business Advice Service to help start-ups, entrepreneurs and SMEs access advice for their business needs.
  • We are registered with ICAEW as a Business Finance Adviser which is a collaboration between the UK Government and other accountancy bodies to encourage entrepreneurship across the UK and ensure businesses have access to qualified professional advisors.

Outside of the accounting industry where possible we try to source nearby suppliers for our business needs in order to support the local economy in providing meaningful employment opportunities.
